Key highlights:

  • Coinbase rebranded Base App to Coinbase Wallet, separating the wallet from the Base blockchain branding
  • The rebrand addressed confusion over Base’s role, as Coinbase Wallet supports Bitcoin, Solana, Ethereum, and multiple EVM networks
  • Base continues to grow, racking up $5.7 billion in TVL and 277.5 million transactions in August

Coinbase has renamed its Base App back to Coinbase Wallet, reversing a rebrand that lasted over a year as the company positions the self-custody wallet as a multichain trading platform. The move addresses a major source of confusion around the Base name, which led some users to associate the wallet primarily with Coinbase’s Base network.

Coinbase moves away from the Base-only perception

Coinbase has rebranded the Base App as Coinbase Wallet, introducing a new logo to emphasize its multichain functionality. The change came after an X user asked whether the Base App supports blockchains beyond Base, and Head of Coinbase’s consumer app team Jordan “Cobie” Fish decided it was time to rebrand.

Coinbase originally changed the Coinbase Wallet name to Base App in 2025 as it sought to turn the wallet into an “everything app.” After the rebrand, Base App combined crypto trading with social features, content, and onchain applications.

At the time, Base described the product as the next evolution of Coinbase Wallet rather than simply a wallet for its Ethereum layer-2 network.

The Base branding, however, created an obvious point of confusion. Base is also the name of Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, leaving users to determine whether the Base App was solely a gateway to that network or a broader crypto wallet.

Barely one year since the name change, Coinbase is now reversing its decision. The newly christened Coinbase App will operate as Coinbase Wallet, while Base remains the name of Coinbase’s blockchain and its surrounding ecosystem.

Coinbase Wallet supports multiple networks rather than being limited to Base. The wallet supports Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, and several EVM-compatible networks, including Base, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Polygon, and BNB Chain.

Base keeps growing as a separate blockchain

The timing of the rebrand is notable, as Base has continued to expand its footprint across the ecosystem. Base’s DeFi activity has grown by leaps and bounds, with its total value locked surging to $5.7 billion.

Meanwhile, the network processed north of 277.5 million transactions in August, averaging almost 9 million transactions per day. Back in August, Base also recorded about 284,000 daily active addresses during the month despite playing second fiddle to Robinhood Chain in on-chain metrics.

The network’s cumulative address count has also surged. However, cumulative addresses should not be treated as a direct measure of users because a single person or application can generate multiple addresses.

Coinbase has highlighted Base’s growing role in stablecoin activity in the ecosystem. The company reported that stablecoin transaction volume on Base increased sevenfold year over year in Q2 2026.
