Bitcoin Logs Strongest August in Nine Years, Setting Stage for Q4

Bitcoin is on track to wrap this August with its strongest performance for the month in nine years.

The bellwether coin has managed to reverse a multi-quarter slump.

Now, the cryptocurrency’s late-summer rally is drawing direct comparisons to the historic and headline-grabbing price action that precipitated the 2017 bull run.

A decisive breakout

According to the historical performance, Bitcoin’s third-quarter (Q3) return for 2026 currently stands at a robust 32.48%.

This has seemingly put an end to the bearish trend that dominated the first half of the year. The flagship cryptocurrency saw consecutive quarterly losses of 22.2% in Q1 and 14.09% in Q2.

The average Q3 return for Bitcoin is just 7.94%.

In fact, to find a more explosive third quarter, traders have to look back to 2017.

Back then, Bitcoin registered an 80.41% gain in Q3 before launching into a massive 215.07% rally in Q4.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $1.92 billion in inflows. This was the largest weekly accumulation since October 2025.

The U.S. Treasury’s recent decision to double its long-dated bond buybacks is considered to be the main catalyst behind the rally.

During this August, Bitcoin short sellers were squeezed for approximately $6.55 billion.

The structural similarities to 2017 are quite striking.

In August 2017, a similar summer surge formed the foundation for a parabolic fourth quarter.

After a brief September correction, Bitcoin rallied 325% from its late-August baseline to near $20,000 by mid-December.

It remains to be seen whether history will repeat itself this time around.

According to Fidelity’s Jurrien Timmer, Bitcoin has managed to hold the floor of its power law curve. The cryptocurrency has now corrected long enough to satisfy the time element of its mild four-year cycle winter. This indicates that a bullish turnaround could be likely.
