Avalanche expands its public-sector footprint with Kenya’s national rollout
Kenya has introduced a blockchain system to secure national academic credentials and reduce certificate fraud. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) built the platform with Avalanche technology through a local Kenyan provider. The system gives employers, universities, and schools faster nationwide access to verified examination records.
Avalanche Network Supports National Credential Checks
KNEC has started anchoring historical and current examination records on the Avalanche C-Chain. The project covers records dating back to 1989 and supports secure digital certificate verification. It also reduces dependence on slow manual checks and separate institutional databases.

The platform currently includes more than 15 million academic records across several national examination categories. KNEC expects the total number of secured records to reach about 35 million nationwide. The system will also process millions of new digital certificates annually as students complete national examinations.
Nearly one million KCSE 2025 certificates are available only through the electronic certificate platform. Candidates can access, download, and verify those documents online through a dedicated secure portal. As a result, employers and universities can confirm records within seconds instead of waiting months.
KNEC Targets Certificate Fraud and Verification Delays
Kenya has faced persistent cases involving forged certificates and false academic claims. Traditional checks often require written requests, offline files, and long administrative reviews. High-volume recruiters can therefore wait several months before confirming a large group of applicants.
Earlier digital systems improved access but still relied on central databases and printed QR codes. Fraudsters could copy those codes or create false websites that resembled official verification portals. Blockchain records reduce that risk by linking each credential to a permanent and traceable entry.

The new system shifts verification from manual institutional approval to direct digital proof. Verifiers can check whether a certificate matches the record secured on the blockchain. However, KNEC has not disclosed adoption figures among employers, universities, or certificate holders.
Kenya Extends Blockchain Use Across Public Records
The project covers primary, secondary, diploma and government teaching certification records. It includes KCPE, KCSE, advanced diploma programs, and teaching faculty qualifications. The system reaches several stages of Kenya’s national education structure.
Avalanche has supported other public record projects through similar blockchain infrastructure. India’s Dantewada district digitized more than 700,000 land records using the LegitDoc platform. The project shortened verification periods and gave officials a tamper-resistant record system.
Other projects have applied Avalanche technology to vehicle titles and property deeds in the United States. California digitized millions of vehicle titles, while Bergen County began tokenizing property records. Kenya now adds academic credentials to that growing list of public-sector blockchain uses.
