The crypto market has more tokens than ever, but fewer of them are reaching billion-dollar valuations.
The number of crypto tokens with market capitalizations above $1 billion, sometimes referred to as crypto unicorns, has declined for 12 consecutive months, according to new data from crypto analytics firm CryptoRank.

The shift marks a change in how digital asset value is distributed. While the overall crypto market has continued to evolve, fewer individual tokens are capturing enough liquidity and investor demand to cross the $1 billion threshold.
Two sectors that were once major contributors to the billion-dollar token group, GameFi and NFTs, now have no representatives.
The Number of Billion-Dollar Crypto Tokens Is Declining
CryptoRank’s data shows the number of tokens with market capitalizations above $1 billion has steadily decreased over the past year. The metric measures market breadth — how many assets reach major valuation levels — rather than the total size of the crypto market or the price performance of Bitcoin.
The number of billion-dollar tokens reached its highest recorded level in November 2021, when 107 assets crossed the threshold. The group also exceeded 100 tokens in October 2021 with 105 assets and again in March 2024 with 103 assets.
After the collapse of FTX, the number fell sharply, reaching 37 tokens in December 2022. Although crypto markets recovered afterward, the number of billion-dollar tokens has not returned to previous highs.

According to CryptoRank, the decline comes as the number of token launches continues to grow, spreading liquidity across a wider range of assets.
As more projects compete for capital, fewer individual tokens are able to accumulate the scale required to join the billion-dollar group.
How Stablecoins, GameFi, and NFTs Changed the Billion-Dollar Token Group
CryptoRank’s analysis shows a shift in sector representation among billion-dollar tokens. Blockchain tokens have maintained the largest share of the group across the measured periods.
Stablecoins, meanwhile, have gained a larger presence. According to CryptoRank, stablecoins accounted for 19% of billion-dollar tokens in July 2026, reflecting their expanding role in payments, trading, and on-chain settlement.

The biggest change has come from GameFi and NFTs.
Both sectors had billion-dollar representatives during the 2021 crypto boom, when gaming tokens and digital collectibles attracted significant investor attention. Today, CryptoRank’s data shows that neither category has a token above the $1 billion market capitalization mark.
On the Flipside
- The CryptoRank report tracks the monthly number of tokens reaching unicorn status but does not analyze trading volume, investor demand, or the performance of projects that dropped out.
- The data provides a snapshot of market concentration and sector changes, but it does not directly measure overall crypto market health or investor sentiment.
Why This Matters
The shrinking number of billion-dollar tokens suggests that crypto’s market structure is changing.
During previous cycles, large numbers of new projects were able to achieve massive valuations during periods of strong speculation. Today, capital appears to be concentrating around fewer sectors, while some once-dominant narratives have lost momentum.
The next phase of crypto growth may depend less on how many tokens reach billion-dollar valuations and more on which projects can sustain real demand over time.
